Selection Committee

Jonathan Galassi, Chairman
A translator, essayist and poet in his own right. As Executive Editor and Chief at Farar Strauss and Giroux, he is most certainly a model and encouragement to others.

Andre Bishop
His work as Artistic Director at Playwright’s Horizons produced three Pulitzer Prizes. He’s currently the Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater. While contending with the renovation of both the Beaumont and Newhouse theaters, he has six new productions scheduled for this season, including a new play by Wendy Wasserstien, a revival of Lillian Helman’s The Little Foxes, and, of course, the production, Juan Darian, A Carnival Mass, which will be directed by Julie Tamor.

David Del Tredici
His work has been commissioned and performed by nearly every major orchestra in America and Europe. Louis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland, has provided Mr. Del Tredici with the inspiration for a number of best-selling works. And won him a Pulitzer Prize and that inspiration apparently continues as he’s currently working on an opera entitled, Dum De Tweedle.

Martin Friedman
A long-time director of The Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, serving that institution for 30 years, he oversaw the extensive development of its collection, Artistic Programs and physical plant. Now retired, he is much sought after as a consultant to arts programs and museums in the U.S. and abroad.

Julie Taymor
A director of opera, theater and film, a recipient of many awards. She’s directed plays and operas for major companies around the world. Last winter, she received much critical praise for her production of The Green Bird, at the New Victory Theater. Later this fall, she will direct a new play, called Juan Darian, a Carnival Mass, which will be the first play to be presented at the new renovated Beaumont Theater. And she has been selected to design and direct Disney’s The Lion King, when it comes to Broadway next year.
